Jim, I changed my H to 12 volt alternator but I had to use a alternator from a newer chevy because the Delco 10SI would not fit under the hood of the H. I used a alternator from a 87 chevy and fits ok. Only bad part is the newer, smaller alternators have a built in computer and voltage regulator which needs to have 3 to 6 volts to operate it. For this you have to use the resistor or lamp for this voltage. I also made a new pully as small as I could to get more rpm's. (This may not have to be done but I did it anyway.) Also, NEVER remove the battery wire from the battery while the tractor is running or you will ruin the computer (not voltage regulator, which it has built in also) in the alternator. I drilled a hole between the ammeter and light switch for the lamp (next to the fuse holder.) I bought a 12 volt battery for a Dodge mini van which fit quite well in the original battery box. (NEG. GROUND) Another thing I did is change the starter switch to a key switch and solenoid mounted behind the gas tank support, so I could remove the key so the grandchildren coulden't start the tractor. I just screwed the key switch into the hole where the old starter switch was. You must add the resistor to the coil and change the connections on the back of the ammeter also. Don't forget to change the light bulbs also. Now I just touch the starter and the H is running and even starting at low idel the alternator starts charging right away. I love it!
