The shift pattern is like a zig zag starting from top left it goes reverse,shift down into first,then up into second,then down into third,then up in the top right hand side is fourth,then down is fifth. And NO you do not fill the oil through the govener.The oil fill is a big winged cap in front of the magneto or distributor.
