I am with Hugh on this. If you dont want to be wrenching on a tractor you better not buy a 1940's 50's or 60's tractor.
Now if wrenchin a bit is not out of the question.
Old Farmall are easy to work on. You should be able to find a nice wide front Farmall H with a loader for under $2000. maybe a little more if its in real good shape.
