On the front of the lower shaft as you described is a threaded nut that tightens against the bearing. This nut is the part you described with the slot in it for the coupling. I blocked the wheels and used a flat piece of bar stock to loosten it. I cant remember for sure but I think it is standard right hand thread. After you get this nut off, the bearing retainer will come off the front of the shaft. P.S. Dont forget to replace the seal when it goes back together.
