John, This is kinda late, but I just read your post. A friends father just had the exact same problem with his '43 M. We were at a local tractor pull this past June and the M would run fine, then all of a sudden start to break up and die. Cranked the livin daylights out of it and BANG out the muffler and off with the rain cap (thank god it didn't hit anyone in the head because we had no idea it came off until it hit the ground a few feet away!). We found out by chance a week or so later that it was the reproduction IH push-pull ignition switch that was the problem. The machine was doing the same thing again, and someone put their hand on the switch and wiggled it a bit. The machine smoothed right out. Wiggle the switch a bit more and it would break up again. Installed a new NOS IH switch bought through the classified on this site, and the M runs great now. Check your electrical system to make sure nothing is intermittently cutting your power to the coil causing the problem. ATW.
