Farmall A clutch question

Hi Guys, On the 1939 Farmall A I just got I've noticed that when you start the tractor (in Neutral of course) and push in the clutch it doesn't completely disconnect the trans from the engine. When I move the shifter it will grind for a few seconds until everything stops. Is this normal with these old machines. It's been raining for the past week so I haven't been out to try the old double clutch trick. Once you're underway you can shift no problem, it's seems to be just when you start her up. Any ideas? thanks,
