Bill gave an excellent discription of the operation of the cutout system. If your question is directed for troubleshooting, I will add my 2-cents. The cutout is a relay. After the tractor starts, the contacts close and connect the generator to the battery. When the tractor is shut off, it opens. Obviously if it doesn't close, it won't charge and if it sticks closed it will discharge the battery. The light switch controls the charge rate by controlling the generator field current. Grounding the field windings will produce maximum charge. This is why Bill mentioned the importance of grounding the instrument box. The light switch connects the generator field windings through a resistor to ground for "L" charge and directly to ground for "H" charge. A voltage regulator has a set of "cutout" contacts and a second set of contacts to automatically control the generator field current (charge rate). K-Mo

Timing Your Magneto Ignition Tractor - by Chris Pratt. If you have done major engine work or restored your tractor, chances are you removed the magneto and spark plug wires and eventually reached the point where you had to put it all back together and make it run. On our first cosmetic restoration, not having a manual, we carefully marked the wires, taped the magneto in the position it came off, and were careful not to turn the engine over while we had these components off. We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t
