Found in gas tank

When I removed the gas tank from my H last spring, I found it clean inside except that when I turned it upside down a steel bolt 3/4 x2" came tumbling out. I didnt think about it much then, because I thought that maybe some kid had dropped it in there but after thinking about it (3 or 4 months), I was wondering if someone may have put it in there for a reason. Could it be that it was placed there as a sacrifice so that any rust would attack the bolt and not the gas tank.? Let me know if anyone has heard of this or done this.
