I just rebuilt a carb for a 1950 Farmall M and I used muriatic acid, it didn't do any damage but there is an aluminum sleeve in the center that desolves very fast. The best way to cleen all that crap out of there is soak it over night in paint thinner then scrub the inside with a stiff bristol paint brush. If it is very bad use those small brass wire brushes from car parts. That will clean it up nice, take off all grease and paint and leave a nice surface for the repaint.
