Hugh, The 560,or D-282 is a pre-combustion engine.The glow plugs are in the pre-cup just under the injector. They screw in to the injector body. When heated they heat the area in the pre-cup. When trying to start the engine with out the glow plugs the cylinder air temp.is not hot enough to make the engine fire correctly. When starting fluid is placed in the cylinder it is not ignited at the proper time, as direct injected engines. This is part of the reason for blown head gaskets.
