Cute story. If you are serious about your question, the tractor's starter must use stored energy in the battery to turn the traactor over to start it. Ounce it is started, the tractor is capable of running without stored energy because the generator or mag wichever you have produces enough electricity to create the spark for the spark plugs which is all the engine needs to just run. If you have a distributor, the tractor will likely die if you turn the lights on, or perhaps if engine is idled down to real low RPM because then you are using more juice than the generator is putting out. I think you have the right idea. Teach the kids when they are young. I learned alot when I was growing up, being around the old tractors.
