Yes you can do that, but it won't solve your problem. Either the starter is bad or you are shorting out some of your current. The coil has nothing to do with it. Chances are if you take the starter out and check it, you'll think it is OK. Without a load, the starter will likely zip up to speed and make you think it's worth puting back in and giving it another shot. HA! I spent an afternoon doing just that. Finally took it to AUTOZONE. The guy asked me if it jumped out of my hands when I checked it out of the tractor. I told him no but it seemed to turn a lot faster. He said it should have enough torque so that you can't hang on to it when you apply current. He then showed me their tester and how they strap them down so nobody gets hurt by a flying starter. When he tested it, he just shook his head and said not enough torque to start a VW Bug. He knew they didn't carry an IH starter so he referred me to a shop that rebuilt it for $179.
I checked the tractor parts places on the Internet and a rebuilt one was $350 plus core. So,to make a short story long, take it to AUTOZONE or similar place and get it checked out. GOOD LUCK, Jim
