I have got a high compression M head (casting number 8060) that I was going to have rebuilt. The head shop found several cracks in it. One crack runs from one seat over to the other seat. Some of the water port holes have hairline cracks and so on. He thought I might want to find another head. I talked to another guy that was probably more Farmall oriented, and he said that it was common for those heads to crack like that but rare to find one that would leak. I was going to try to find a good used one, but if they commonly crack like that I might not find one any better than mine. I know for sure that the head gasket was blown. They are talking about $560 for a reconditioned head and $400 just to fix the cracks in mine. Just started to look locally for used head but haven't covered all the bases yet. What are your thoughts on the cracks? What should I do?
