I ussually adjust valve clearance to what is specified for hot even though the engine is cold. Then I put the valve cover back on and run untill engine reaches normal operating temperatures. Then I simply remove the valve cover and re-do the valve clearance procedure. This way the valve clearance can be adjusted while the valves are hot and you will be close to start out with. Ussually you will only have to adjust slightly, but I still re-adjust just because the specification is for hot. Then you can put the valve cover, hood, and what not back on.
