I have two suggestions.

1) While I don't have my book in front of me and am not able to access it right now I believe that D-14s were the old style plugs that do not perform well with current gasoline mixes. They have bee replaced if I remember correctly by D-20s. It should be easy to verify with anyone who deals with plugs for old tractors.
And 2) I had a somewhat similiar experience with my F-12, though it would run for about half a minute before stopping and failing to restart as opposed to 5 seconds. The problem was flooding caused by a crack in the fuel float that allowed fuel to seep into the float and sink it thereby flooding the engine everytime I started it and it ran for a few seconds. The crack was unobservable to the naked eye. It was only after removing the float and shaking it that I could tell that it was full of fuel. Only by slightly twisting the fuel float could the crack be manifested. I wound up sealing it with a thin film of solder. Afterwards it started and ran just fine.
