Depends on how much dirt is in the gas tank. I clean mine out at least every time I change the oil, more often if it looks dirty.
If it has the original style sediment bowl, turn off the tank valve, then loosen the thumb nut under the bowl, take it down, then using a small screwdriver carefully pull down the screen above the bowl, clean it, then put it all back together.
