When the switch over lever is in the gas position, a third valve in each cylinder opens to a chamber in the head that contains the spark plug. This reduces the compression ratio for gas operation. The starter does not crank the engine very fast, even in gas mode, but it will be much slower in diesel. Sounds like your compression release valves may not be set correctly. You have to remove the valve rocker arm cover to set the clearance on the decompression valves.
