Pat, I just did this with my M a few weeks ago and got it running. I think by my experience that if you don't mess with things too much you can unbolt the mag, change the points and bolt it back in. After removing the mag there is the distributor and rotor to pull off. Next there are three screws holding a plate over top of the points and condenser, they can only go back on one way but marking the position of the plate with some yellow crayon will save you twisting and turning the plate till you get it right. I use fine emery cloth doubled over and positioned between the points and rub the cloth back and forth for several minutes..not only does this clean the points but it aligns the surfaces when the emery cloth is removed. I then just put everything back on the tractor as I took it off and the old M fired right up.Don't snap the mag over or don't turn the engine over when the mag is removed and thus it will go back in correctly. If youy have to time it you will find notches on the front crank pulley, there are two ways to time it..TDC or align the notch in the pulley to the mark on the block...the mag should fire as the piston moves from TDC...I've had to do this with the M three or four times in the last few years as I sometimes let it sit for several months..just clean up the points and I'm in business....good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
