My 656D starts right up by just holding the glow plugs for about 20-30 seconds before cranking. Once it is warm, I can shut it down for a while and don't need them at all unless it has cooled down completly. I'm in the same boat as TP though, i just got it this spring and haven't used it in the winter yet. The book for mine says to hold them on for 1 min. above 32 deg, 1 1/2 min below 32 deg.
