When we first got our 856 it did the same thing. After a lot of checking with a test light, we found a bad wire going to the light switch which would ground out the ignition switch in the start position. It took a lot of looking to find, but was easy to fix. Don't know if a similar thing could be causing your problem, but the wiring on these tractors is getting a little old and can cause problems.
