Do as Hugh says. Actually the seal doesn't blow. Since the shaft turns all the time the seal, or o-ring, depending on the pump, slowly wears out, while at the same time wearing a groove in the shaft. The combination results in a progressively worse leak. It doesn't happen all at once, but takes years. I suppose use of the hydraulics will force oil past a worn seal, but it doesn't actually increase the wear on the seal or shaft.
