DJ: My first reaction is your plow is a 311. The coil spring you mention was an option avaivable on most mounted IH plows in the years just preceeding the trip bottoms. Can you post or send me a picture of this plow. Removing the third bottom from plow could present some problems in getting it to pull right. Remember that pull beam with the coil spring must pull from the center of the total plowing cut. That part should be adjustable. There were some differences on these and without picture there is a chance of giving you misinformation. I like to see people achive good plowing, competition calibre plowing.
