I don't know. With the paper, the buyer has more time to think about it and negotiate. At an auction, particularly one some distance from where you live, there is less time to think and evaluate the tractor. I hate negotiations. Some people have a lot of fun with them. Since I know I will have to pay more to fix the tractor up than it costs, anyway, I would prefer to buy at auction. But, the cheapest tractor I have was a private deal. However, SMTA's are rarer than the other letter series, they will sell for more, and cost as much or more to repair as another letter series tractor. People, including me, sometimes pay too much at auction, because they are bidding against another crazy person. But the negotiation is over in a hurry.
