A quick and dirty way to test a coil is to ground the terminal that goes to the points - after removing the ignition wire from the other terminal. Pull the high voltage wire at the distributor cap end. Position the tip of the high voltage wire about a quarter inch from any engine frame/block component. Now touch any hot wire from the battery to the ignition terminal side of the coil. The high voltage wire should produce a spark every time you remove this ignition wire from the coil. Look for a nice brisk blue spark. Beware of a lame orange spark. One thing to note: Many coils only fail when they are hot. If the above test works on a cold coil, you may still have a coil problem. This is usually indicated by having the engine run fine when things are cold, but having problems with missing or cutting out as things warm up.
