My experience is tank heaters are much better than the frost plug heaters. This only applies to engines that have the connections for a tank heater. The IH German Diesels like the 179D, 239D
all have a pipe plug in the block and in hot water
return that can be removed and a tank heater connected to. A tank heater must be installed correctly so that the cold antifreeze is heated and circulates in the block.
In -20F weather a tank heater can be plugged in for 20 minutes and the tractor will start but when we used a frost plug heater had to plug in for 1 hour or more.

Of course a lot depends on how cold is normal for your area.
