I'd be hesitant to use a starter generator for several reasons:

-Unless your Continental engine is very small (like less than 60 or 70 cubic inches) it's unlikely a starter/generator will have enough stooch to crank the engine.

-You'll need room at the front of the engine to install a fairly large diameter (10" or more) pulley on the crankshaft for the starter/generator belt.

-Also my experience is starter/generators are not particularly durable. In operation they must spin fast and tend to get VERY hot - bearings and brushes require regular replacement.

Suggestion: Have taken the engine number to your local forklift dealer? Forklifts have been powered by small Continental engines for decades - there's lots of them still in service. Chances are good forklift dealer can supply a replacement starter, or at least recommend a source.
