I'd say you have a point of high resistance that make the heat build up. The cause of the High resistance, corrosion, metal fatigue, etc. I would remove the strap and examine, if it appears to be intact, clean any corrosion off and reinstall it. If you continue to use it in the shape it is in it or something far more expensive will fail. Probably the best advice is, if it looks at all suspect, replace it. ABW
