The firing order is 1342 and 1 is suppose to be timed with 1 on distributor cap. But you are right, doesn't make any differense which prong on the cap you time number one to, as long as the firing order stays the same and starts where you timed number one at. Sounds like you got a non original air filter. Easy way to rule out any problem there is to disconnect it from carb and run tractor without it hooked up to see if problem is still there. If that isn't the problem, I would make sure the tractor is timed correctly. If making some changes there, it might be a good time to go ahead and retime the engine to number one on distributor cap with number one cylinder. If timing checks out, I would bet it is either in the carb, or ignition system. Never been around that electronic ignition system myself.
