While building the Alaska pipeline, during the extremely cold winter, they had lots of trouble with lubrication when first starting engines. The extreme cold caused the oil to get so thick it would not circulate and the bearing were burning up due lack of lubrication. After many ruined engines and much expermenting, they devised a test to see if it was safe to start the engine. The test was to pull the dipstick to see if the oil would drip from it. No drip - no start engine! If it won't drip you need a thinner oil.
