Could be your looking at the wrong nut for adjustment. I believe it's a 13/16s open end on the nut BEHIND the pulley that you loosen to slide the assembly up and down to adjust the tension. Do not try to loosen the large nut in the very rear of the bracket. That one just slides up and down in the groove of the bracket. I just loosen the inner nut and then use a pry bar or long heavy duty screw driver to hold the fan and pulley where I want it then tighten the inner nut up agains the rear breacket.
