Obviously something after the differential is broken or disconnected. The axle would be at the top of my list of suspects. Do you notice any tire lean on the left side? Break could be between bearings (thus the tire lean question) or between bull gear and inner bearing. I would think teeth stripped off the bull gear or bull pinion would make some noise and at least function where the teeth are still good. So I'd look hard at the axle. Try removing the outer bearing retainer and see if you can pull the axle/bearing out any significant amount. If axle is intact,it won't come out until you remove the bull gear. Good luck.
