Geting a tractor to run after it has set fo a while

I'm trying to get an old tractor running...put a new battery on it, it cranks good, it is getting gas (to much?) because I can smell it coming out the exhaust stack. I guess it is electrical unless the thing is flooding. Any suggestions on where to start on the ignition? It was running fine before it set up, so my first thought is to check all wires for corrosion...second, maybe the coil is bad, last, maybe the distributor cap has moisture in it ir the points need replacing/re-filing... Is this the right order to check stuff out or is there a better way?
