I recently bought a late model IH-484 that has a broken Tach. As I started looking for the cause of the problem I found the cable core sheared off at the engine. Bought a new cable and decided to see if the tach was functioning, it was frozen up. I tried to lube it with some WD-40 but it was terminally locked. Time to buy a new Tach. This got me thinking about how to reduce wear on the cable and tach. My question is, does the Tach or cable require any inital or periodic lubrication? If so, what lube would work without gumming up the system? Graphite, penetrating oil, ...? Thanks for your advise!
