If it is a Delco alternator, with engine running at half throttle, turn on all the head/tail lights, put your hand on the alternator chasis being carefull not to stick your fingers in the cooling fan, the alternator chasis should become warm to the touch. If it stays cold it is not charging. Reason the Delco alternator uses the chasis as a heat sink for the solid state rectifier/regulator and as current flows thru rectifier the chasis will heat up.
