The type of crimp also depends on the type of terminal that you are putting on the wire. Once you have determined the correct size terminal for the wire, strip the insulation back far enough to allow for the terminal to go on the wire. Generally speaking; the length of the thickness of the cable that you are crimping the terminal on to should be sticking out of the terminal. Then select the correct position on your crimping tool to crimp the terminal onto the cable. Most crimping tools have a color gauge (ie. blue terminal crimped onto cable there will be a blue dot on the crimping tool). Crimp the terminal with the insulator in place. Lots of times, if I have heat shrink available I will slide a piece of heat shrink over the connection and shrink it to the cable and terminal. Hope this helps you out with your wiring project.
