Mark, Sounds like a diaphram is blown in the vaporiser! What that means is the engine will flood almost Immedataly if not sooner when you try to start it. First, make sure the L. & V. valves are not leaking through in any way. If they are leaking ...R&R or get a rebuild kit. Now that there isn't any leakage. With both L. & V. valves closed.....Start cranking the engine and crack the V. valve and the engine should start...after she does let her warm up... then open the L. valve, close the V. valve and she should be good to go for a while. To shut down...Shut off the L. valve...let engine burn all the fuel out of the line, and then die...cut off the switch. OBTW..If you want to go to all this trouble call me if you will.....probably NOT. $1000 is a good price for this ol girl. Buy her before someone else does and strips her of the head, for some pulling tractor! Do you know if she is a Stage I or II. Hopes this helps! Good Luck, John A.
