David: As for the little u-shaped devices you are correct in assuming that its purpose is to keep the needle valve in contact with the float. If you don't feel you need it, leave it out. But I have seen cases where the needle can tend to "stick" in the valve area. This connector eliminates this problem. As for the choke shaft not fitting properly, first compare it closely with your original shaft if you have it. I have rebiult hundreds of carbs and you would not believe how many I see that are not for said application or have the wrong parts used. Do not be suprised however if the choke or throttle shaft do not correspond to the original. Many of the aftermarket kits I have used have faulty parts.For example I recently rebuilt 30 farmall-400 carbs and out of 30 kits, I had maybe 5-6 throttle shafts I could use. Glad I have plenty of parts left from previous rebuilds. Hope this helps.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
