I have a '52 M on which I replaced the engine yesterday with a '40 engine serial # 19000 (about) that probably came off an I-6 (painted orange). It runs like a top. Need to understand the electrical theory involved in the generator/voltage regulator system. I have used both magnetor and distributor ignition on my tractors and change them out easily (only one wire needs to be changed in most cases). My problem is tracing the source of a problem in the charging system. How does one trouble shoot the system to identify a faulty component? Is the voltage regulator bad?; or, is the generator putting out a normal voltage? My wiring is done to the actual drawings copied out of a parts dealer's original catalog (as best as I can determine. Any help will be appreciated.
