Since you have oil pan, valve cover, and side cover off: Use Kerosene or solvent (better idea is solvent) and a scraper/paint brush/tooth brush to clean away as much as you can. As far as running it with something to clean it out, this is what I would do: fill with oil, add 1 quart kerosene, new oil filter. Run for 5 to 10 minutes and drain. Re-fill with fresh oil and new filter again, run 30 minutes or more - drain again to remove any left over kerosene or junk. Re-fill with fresh oil. If you don't think you can get all the sludge out, simply use 30 weight NON-detergent oil. A detergent oil will break the sludge loose, possibly clogging oil passages. This is just an opinion on what I would do.
