John, WE had a 48 MD also, and the protocal we used was: (1) Switchover handle foreward, throttle off. (2) Start on gas and let run for approximately one minute, longer if below freezing. (3) After gas warmup, give quarter to half throttle. (4) Pull switchover handle back. (Note: No more than one second should elapse from throttling sequence and switching from gas to diesel) There may be a more proper way, but this always worked for us. While on the subject, we always idled down on diesel, then switched back to gas with throttle off and let idle for approximately 15 seconds then pulled back switchover handle with throttle completely off to shut off tractor. This was to create a cool down period before shuting down completely. I know some people just cooled down on diesel, and didn't switch to gas before shutting down. I really don't know which is correct, or if there is a correct way other than making sure the tractor isnt shut off immediately without a cooldown. This prevents cracking the head.
