Aces, I work at a mine site. They will not even allow chain on the property due to the fact that it will break without warning. Everything is nylon slings and wire rope. I don't think you magna flux every link on your chain before you use it, but i bet you would noticed a fray on your towstrap. straps/slings and wire rope are more "dummy proof" for saftey checks than chain. There is a big diffrence between towing your super A out of the ditch and a D11N cat out of a taillings pond. A chain large enough to tow out the cat would need hercules to carry it. People run into trouble because they use a walmart towstrap meant to tow out chevettes to do farmwork, most wouldn't consider using a dogchain which is about as strong. Do some research before you flap your lips in the future.
