Yes they can be good one second and bad the next. Shadetree method is to connect + side of coil to + side of battery with jumper wire and provide jumper wire a few feet from - side. With the primary(large wire that goes to distributor) held firmly about 1/4" from - momantarily touch -of coil to -jumper wire. If coil is good you will get a good spark off the primary. This is actually duplicating in function of the points in slow motion.
