How to install a voltmeter

I have a single wire 12V neg ground conversion on my 1947 H. I've heard that a voltmeter can be more useful for monitoring charging/electrical systems but, not wanting to blow up my voltmeter, I need to walk through the procedure step-by-step. I read one post that said (paraphrased) hook the + post on the voltmeter to the positive post on the battery and the - lead post on the voltmeter to any good ground. Make sure there's a switch in the circuit so the voltmeter doesn't run down the battery. My question is this - can I safely install the voltmeter by running a lead from the shut-off switch (the side that has the other lead that runs to the coil) to the + post on the voltmeter and run another lead from the - post on the voltmeter to a good ground? This way, the shut off switch takes care of the battery run-down. Thanks, Dave
