Hi BFarr, It all depends upon your battery's state of charge. If the battery is fully charged, the system should be regulated to maintain it's voltage at 14.2 volts. If however, the battery is very low, the rate could be as high as 16 to 18 volts. I wouldn't want to see a system running any higher than 18v, however as this would more than likely indicate a shorted exciter circuit. When you first start your rig, the charging voltage will be fairly high and then will gradually come down to 14.2 volts within a few minutes as the battery is recharged back to it's original state.
