it just went BANG

this morning,i was driving my 1949 farmall m when the engine went BANG. it rattled a little and sounded like it metal rattling around inside it before i could pull over to shut it off. iuse this tractor every day so i need to fix this as soon as i can. how bad is this going to be once i start to brake it down? my first thought is that it threw a rod, am i on the right track?
