Jim,
Check distributor cap,rotor,wires and condenser.
Cracks or tracking in the cap can steal all of your spark.
If these are OK check for a weak coil. I also had a spark plug go bad and it drove me crazy for a while. The plug was almost new so I never even checked them out.
Let us know how your dad makes out with it all.
