Joe; I have encountered this very same problem in an 856 only with the forward reverse; particularly the reverse. While worn parts in the whole linkage probably add to the problem, I believe excessive wear in the Hi-Lo shift collar(IH part #393521R1) which the fork moves is your main problem. Yes you probably will have to split to fix, but if your tractor is like mine & you plan on putting many more hours on it it will be a good time to go through the whole rear end. One idea would be to look for a cheap 806 at auction with a bad motor to supply you with parts. Keep in mind you will need to watch for serial number breaks to be sure the parts will be identical.
