Bill,
I have used 10-40 Valvoline in everything for 30 years. I have a 20 year old Chevy pick-up with 400,000+ miles on the original motor. It still has good oil pressure. I took a trip out to Connecticut this summer on my '70 Norton Commando, and it used a half a pint on the way out.

When I rebuilt my H, the valves weren't seating so well any more and there was a thin layer of sludge inside the motor. The sludge probaly came from not always letting it warm up good when I was using it. The valve problem may have come from running it for 10 years on unleaded gas. The tractor came with the place, so I am not sure about it's entire history.

Now everyone says that 10W-40 oil has too many additives to hold up, but it has worked well for me. So I would say that if you use a good brand of oil, it will work just fine.

BTW, we are just a little farther down the road in Delano.

Greg

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
