Electrical Question re:Coil, resistor, 12v

Hello,
I have a 300 row crop with a 12V battery, lamps, and
alternator. Having read some posts here, probably just
enough to be dangerous, I am wondering if
1: is there supposed to be a resistor in line with the coil?
2: is this resistor here only to allow a 6v coil to operate in a
12v system. Why? I am going to be replacing plugs, wires, and coil, dist
cap as they are quite old and showing it. I'd like to know if
I need a 6v or 12v coil. Thanks gents.
