Neg. or pos. ground tells you nothing for sure, just a chance. Generator or alternator tells you absolutely nothing. There are both 6 and 12 volt generators on these tractors. The commonly used GM Delco alternator can be either 6 or 12 volt depending on built in regulator. I have two 6 volt alternators on tractors. Volt meter is the only sure answer, but then you need to have the tractor going, with the battery you use for starting unhooked, or you will just read the voltage of the battery or generating source, which ever is greater.

My suggestion unless one of the reliable sources I have outlined give you the answer, take the generator-regulator or alternator with built in regulator to a shop for testing. I brought home a tractor much like this a year ago. The only possible difference, someone before me had cooked the generator, regulator and amp gauge by fooling around with try this try that. Someone may also been at this Super A, you just don't know, if the vendor doesn't know or remember the last battery.
